Outdoor Christmas party / Goûter de Noël en plein air

On the 11th day of Advent, the four acorns made their way to the Octagon, in the Glen of the Downs, Co Wicklow, to have an outdoor Christmas party.

Mermaid had spent the morning preparing decorations for a tree – she threaded some twine on last year’s DIY clay ornaments, and strung fresh cranberries into edible garlands for the birds. Meanwhile, I made some Christmas treats and hot drinks, with Pebbles’ help. 

Le onzième jour de l’Avent, les graines de chêne ont pris le chemin de l’Octogone, dans le Glen of the Downs, Co Wicklow, pour un goûter de Noël en plein air.

Sirène avait passé la matinée à fabriquer des décorations pour un arbre de la forêt : elle a noué une attache sur les décorations en pâte de maïs de l’an dernier, et enfilé des canneberges (cranberries) fraîches en guirlandes comestibles pour les oiseaux. Pendant ce temps, je préparais des friandises de saison avec l’aide de Caillou, ainsi que des boissons chaudes à emporter.

Under a patchy cover of cloud, we took a muddy trail through the deep dark wood of the Glen of the Downs. 

In the rosy afternoon sunshine, the Octagon looked as magical as ever.

With the December light fading fast, we started with the festive picnic – popcorn and æbleskiver (Danish ball pancakes) with a smearing of strawberry jam, washed down with warm cranberry cordial and mulled punch.

We then set off in search of a suitable tree to decorate. Holly was judged too inhospitable for birds, so we went instead for a child-high broad-leaf tree which still carried a few brown, crinkled leaves. Brian and Mermaid strung the cranberry garlands on the thin branches, while the boys hung the white clay ornaments one by one. (Although not edible, the latter will not cause any harm to the local wildlife.)

A return visit will be order soon to check whether our edible garlands are to the taste of the local birds.

Sous un ciel tantôt nuageux, tantôt clair, nous avons emprunté un sentier boueux dans les bois noirs du Glen of the Downs.

Sous le soleil rosé de la fin d’après-midi, l’Octogone était aussi féérique qu’à l’accoutumée.

La lumière de décembre baissant rapidement, nous avons commencé par un goûter festif : popcorn et æbleskiver (boules de pâte à crêpe danoises) avec une lichée de confiture de fraise, arrosés de sirop de groseille chaud et de vin chaud sans alcool.

Puis nous sommes partis en quête d’un arbre à décorer. Le houx fut jugé trop inhospitalier pour les oiseaux, aussi notre choix se porta-t-il sur un arbrisseau à hauteur d’enfant qui arborait encore quelques feuilles marrons froissées. Brian et Sirène accrochèrent les guirlandes de canneberges sur les branches fines, pendant que les garçons suspendaient les décorations blanches en pâte de maïs. (Ces dernières, si elles ne sont pas comestibles, sont sans danger pour la faune du bois.)

Une visite d’inspection sera bientôt de rigueur, pour voir si nos décorations comestibles sont du goût des oiseaux du coin.
