A birthday party under the stars / Un anniversaire sous les étoiles

‘To celebrate Mermaid’s birthday, you are all invited for a movie night under the stars from 8.30pm at our house. The screening will start on the deck at dusk, after the birthday cake.’

It all started with the vague idea of using the new deck of our house in France as an open-air cinema. In the end, our musical-themed premiere came beautifully together, to the rapturous praise and applause of the entire audience.

Premiere 🎥 🎬

All her French cousins and their parents were invited for a screening of Sing, Mermaid’s perfectly fitting choice. A projector was borrowed from my sister’s workplace, my parents’ decade-old viewing screen came out of retirement for the occasion, and 21 folding chairs were lined up on the deck. A set of enchanting fairy lights was strung on the nearby washing line.

Mermaid blew out her birthday candles and opened her presents. Quite fittingly, she got a singing machine! By then it was dark enough to start the movie.

Mermaid sat in the front row with her two favourite cousins. Homemade popcorn was served in paper cups through the screening for the entranced audience.

The movie night ended with the birthday girl and the other children clapping and dancing to the closing song of the film, Don’t you worry bout a thing

Happy birthday Mermaid!!!

  • This looks amazing, what a wonderful way to celebrate a birthday! We saw Sing for the first time this week and thought it was a great film! #countrykids

  • What a wonderful way to celebrate her birthday. We took the film away with us to Windermere and enjoyed an evening snuggled up on the sofa watching it with our girls. Hubby loves Gunther. #CountryKids

  • This is such a lovely idea for a birthday party. How exciting to have your own outdoor theatre. You made it look very special and the faces on the children watching in the dark is magical. I do wish we had the weather in the UK to do this, I’d have a weekly outdoor theatre showing. A very happy birthday to your beautiful Mermaid.

Thank you for sharing with me on #CountryKids

  • What a fun idea for a birthday party. We’ve been trying to set up an outdoor movie night, but never quite works out. Oh for the weather. #CountryKids
