Say CAMPER VAN!!! 🚐

How excited were they! No sooner had Brian disappeared inside the Craic n’ Campers office, than they wriggled out of our jam-packed car to check out the motorhome up close. They had been looking forward to this moment for a whole week, and their patience had just run out.

Our first camper van holiday as a family of six turned out to be one of our very best adventures yet.

It started when I was looking for an Easter getaway, and Brian suggested hiring a camper van. Finding a 6-berth motorhome available for the Easter weekend at affordable prices looked like Mission: Impossible, until I came across Roscommon-based Craic n’ Campers. Finnian O’Connor’s company has four vans available for hire, all of them large enough for a family of six.

I quickly filled out an online booking request for the Carado van – €349 for three nights, insurance included. The booking confirmation came back only hours later, after agreeing on the dates and times for collection and return.

Surprise

The acorns were kept in the dark until the second last day in school before the Easter holidays. Walking out of the school gates Jedi asked if we had any plans for Easter. All I said was that we had a surprise for them.

They spent the rest of the day making wild, outlandish guesses. Brian and I finally spilled the beans during dinner. The look, first of incredulity, then sheer joy, on their gorgeous little faces was simply priceless.

Dites “CAMPING-CAR !!!” 🚐

Ah l’excitation !

To say that they were looking forward to this mini Irish road trip is a massive understatement. And it turned out every bit as good, if not better, as expected.

On the first night we ‘wild camped’ at the stunning Coral Beach (Trá an Dóilin), on the southern shore of Connemara.
On the second night we set up on the grassy dunes of the excellent Clifden eco Beach Camping & Caravanning Park
On the last night we got a woodland pitch at Lough Key Forest Park’s campsite.

In between, we travelled, explored, and played. We even celebrated my birthday in the camper van.

Of course the acorns squabbled when the driving got the better of them. But they also read, played card games, and broke into song every so often. They helped with meal preparation. And they spent four whole days screen-free.

Of course they argued over the sleeping arrangements. In the end, Squirrel and Pebbles had no choice but share the double bed-cum-dining table, as it was too small to fit anyone else. Brian and I picked the large double bed above the driving seats, while Jedi and Mermaid slept in the bunk beds at the back of the camper.

Of course they didn’t want to return the camper van after only three nights. It felt like the holiday was cut short just as we were getting into the swing of it.

This really was a holiday with a difference, to borrow Craic n’ Campers‘ slogan. The freedom of travelling as far or as close as we wanted, of slowing down and setting up camp for as long as we wished, and of exploring to our hearts’ content was simply exhilarating.

Travelling like this as a close-knit, self-contained ‘wolf pack’ also created a wealth of unforgettable memories, and an unexpected bond. And we’re already looking forward to our next camper van getaway.

A camper van holiday can be for everyone – after all, all you need is a valid driving licence. But it does take a bit of getting used to, especially in the first few hours of driving an oversized vehicle.
Don’t forget to bring pillows for everyone, tea towels, and a washing-up bowl. For more travel tips and practical advice, please check out Craic n’ Campers‘ very informative blog.

  • Oh wow massive respect to you. We have thought about it but I think mine are too young to cope with all the driving. I bet it was a great adventure for the kids though and hey clearly had he best time! How did you all sleep? I am worried it would be a tough night with us all in one room? Either way looks like a fab family adventure. Thanks for sharing at #familyfun
