Midsummer camping at Silver Strand / En camping à Silver Strand pour la Saint-Jean

There is something magical about Midsummer. The word conjures up images of a long, gloriously sunny day and roaring bonfires, with folk music and people merrily dancing into the night. How I love this time of year…

For lack of a proper bonfire, we usually light a fire in our beloved fire pit. We don’t jump over it as per the tradition. Instead we roast marshmallows over the embers and make s’mores.

Last year we went to the beach, for a midsummer evening full of enchanting surprises.
For this year’s St. John’s Eve, a.k.a. 23rd June, we went camping.

Midsummer camping

Wolohan’s Silver Strand Caravan and Camping Park, Co Wicklow, is only half an hour down the road, so we left on Friday evening after Brian returned home from work. Following a quick dinner at home, we loaded the car and headed out, as the sun started shining through the dark heavy clouds.

Picking a spot to pitch our tent was a no-brainer. The flat-ish top of the grassy knoll was a little breezy perhaps, but the breathtaking views over the Irish Sea, down below and as far as the eye could see, more than made up for it.

While pitching the tent, we were treated to the most unusual light show over the Irish Sea, as the sun slowly descended behind the Wicklow Mountains. It was like the sun was shining up from under the sea, with huge colourful streaks of light which illuminated the thick clouds above.

Later Jedi lit the fire in our brand new fire pit with his trusty Fire Steel, under Brian’s watchful eyes. Then all four acorns worked hard at breaking up the peat briquettes with small sharp stones found on the driveway. Our little fire under the stars of the shortest night of the year felt like a roaring bonfire.

When the flames died down, out came the marshmallows, cream crackers and dark chocolate, and down went the delicious midsummer s’mores!

The sky was dark at last when we snuggled down to sleep in our sleeping bags.

The next morning was bright as can be. Yet Mermaid and Pebbles had a lie-in, oblivious to their dad impatiently checking the time – the Lions-All Blacks rugby test match was starting at 8.30am, and the plan was to watch the game and have breakfast in Wicklow Town’s Grand Hotel.

When we returned to the campsite two hours later, the weather had turned overcast and breezy. Still, we prepared to walk down to the beach. Brian took the fishing rods – cloudy days are better for fishing. He laughed when I said I might go for a swim again. I simply packed fleeces and thermal tops in the beach bag.

Silver Strand

We were ready for the typical Irish seaside experience – cloudy, windy, with a chance of rain. Instead we got a Mediterranean beach day. Glorious sunshine, turquoise waters, golden sand, even a waterfall – welcome to the Costa de Wicklow!

The sun came out as soon as we reached the strand, down a series of steep concrete steps. Of course I went for another wild swim, much to Mermaid’s delight. The gentle waves of the high tide felt somewhat less cold (I wouldn’t say warmer!) than Greystones’ South Beach a week prior. Still, I stayed in my bikini all day after that. Which, in nearly seven years in this country, was a first for me. Shorts and T-shirts felt superfluous, never mind the warm clothes I had brought!

Between gleeful dips in the Irish Sea, the acorns built elaborate sand castles on the beach. Squirrel, not feeling very well, refused to get wet, but he determinedly tried his hand at fishing.

With the tide slowly ebbing away, we went around the rocky outcrop near the stairs, to explore the rest of Silver Strand. There are many caves, big and small, along the craggy shore. A waterfall flows down the steep hillside. Incredibly, some industrious beach goers had built in the sand a miniature version of the Great Wall of China, which ran the entire length of the beach.

I have no idea who built it, or how long it took, but nobody dared touch it. Until of course the tide washed it away a few hours later…

Silver Strand is one of Ireland’s 50 great beaches, according to The Irish Times, and it’s easy to see why.
