To celebrate his 70th birthday, my dad, a lifelong steam train enthusiast, invited friends and family for a round trip on the Velay Express, for a memorable journey back in time, and through the amazing scenery of Haute-Loire, Auvergne, France.

The invitation card only asked guests to be at my parents’ house at 8.30am on a Sunday morning in July. Once everybody had arrived, my dad announced that we all were to drive to Raucoules, to board a specially reserved passenger carriage on the Velay Express vintage train.

At 10am the enormous locomotive 101 slowly chugged out of the station. Outside, the Velay plateau unravelled its lush green fields and its pine-covered volcanic domes under the infinite blue of the summer sky. Inside, conversation and laughter, fuelled by snacks and refreshments, echoed around the beautiful vintage carriage.

Reserved carriage

At noon the train pulled up with a exhausted sigh at the Chambon-Mazet station. Just like the train carriage, the Hotel du Velay, in Le Chambon-sur-Lignon, was closed to the public to accommodate the 70-strong party. The exquisite lunch, oh so French, extended merrily into the afternoon and ended with a beautiful birthday cake.

There was still time for a group photo before boarding the steam train again for the return journey to Raucoules.

If you didn’t know my parents, you could think that the party ended when the locomotive returned to its shed. Instead, everybody was invited back to my parents’ house, where the birthday celebrations continued late into the night.

A fitting conclusion to an unforgettable day.

  • This is an awesome idea Annette – your parents organised a great event. My father, around the same age as your father, is also a lover of steam trains. My two boys remember heaps of train trips, clambouring over carriages and chatting with drivers with their grandpa.

    • Most of us knew that the surprise event would have something to do with trains! My boys are also mad about trains, especially my 6 yo. Long may this last…

  • This is a fab idea! My brother-in-law is also a steam train fanatic. Might just forward this to my SIL 🙂 He’ll be thrilled to bits to experience this 🙂 #countrykids

  • There is nothing quite like an old steam train. Our little train is electric but we borrowed a steam one for last Christmas when Santa came to visit, it was a huge treat for all the children here. I’m sure your Dad must have been in his element with all his family aboard this lovely old train through the French countryside. Certainly a birthday to remember.

  • Wow what a venue for fabulous landmark birthday. Private carriage train, so special. You all must have had a beautiful day. We have been on a couple of steam trains here but really do love to watch them tug past as we watch from the track edge.
