Looking back before looking forward…

2017 has been a busy year, jam-packed even, with many outdoor adventures, new things learned, and connections made, both blog-related and deeply personal. As I try to set goals for 2018, I find myself reflecting on my blogging highlights of the past twelve months, before linking up again with Sadhbh of Where Wishes Come From.

My list of 10 family escapes in Wicklow remains my most popular post EVER! It received nearly 1,000 views on the blog, and was shared 250 times, no less, on Facebook alone.

Four Acorns Go Camping and Of Coloured Clays and Green Lentils come a distant second and a surprise third.

The post I enjoyed writing the most was Wild Atlantic Achill.

Achill, Co Mayo, is one of those places in Ireland that I find deeply inspiring and uniquely compelling. Although it took me a while to get started with the writing, the post now reads like a proper travel article, and it truly reflects the magic of this stark yet utterly Irish island.

When you take as many pictures as I do, it is hard, very hard, to pick only one. But this one, taken on a mini winter adventure on the beach, is one of my 2017 favourites. I love shooting into the light when the winter sunshine is so low and soft.

Best adventure / Meilleure aventure

Impossible to pick a winner so I’ll leave it at my three highlights of the year, in no particular order.

Besides many more family adventures, 2017 was the year we took up swimming in the Irish Sea before a summer of wild swimming in France, hit the roads of the Wild Atlantic Way in a camper van, and experienced winter camping in a tipi in the wilds of Wicklow.

Can’t wait to see what 2018 has in store for us!

Exploring the outdoors as a family and inspiring other families to unplug, get outside and reconnect with nature and with each other.

Last year I wrote, ‘Although spammers seem to have found my blog with amazing ease, I haven’t had very many comments from readers, so I cherish every single one of them.’

Well, what a difference twelve months make! Since I started regularly joining several link-ups (also called linkies) every week, the comments have been flowing in. So much so that I can’t keep up replying to each and every one of them, unfortunately.

I do read them all, over and over again, as I am always so grateful when someone takes the time to leave a few words on a post that resonated with them.

It was the Four Acorns Christmas party, of course!

All staff, i.e. Brian and myself, were invited for a night of food, drinks and live music in the Harbour Bar, Bray, Co Wicklow. While the acorns watched a Christmas movie at home with a babysitter, we listened to Irish band Cult Called Man until the wee hours.

Brian, IT support, family adventurer and husband extraordinaire, organised the entire evening, which included designing an invitation card that hangs proudly above my desk.

Crafts are not exactly my strong point, but I am quite proud of what is probably my only creation of the year. This Christmas tree made of sticks, which I made with Mermaid one afternoon in December, is something I’d had in mind for a long time.

We tied the sticks we had collected at Powerscourt with some cotton twine and pinned on them colourful glass baubles that turned out too small for the real Christmas tree. The whole thing took barely half an hour from start to finish, for the prettiest effect.

Joining the Mamapreneur Revolution™ Facebook support group for bloggers run by Aby Moore, who blogs at You Baby Me Mummy.

I started by taking her free 5-day course Let’s Get Visible. Then by joining in on the conversations in the group and interacting with other bloggers, I soon got a much clearer idea of what my blog is all about – I identified my niche!

Psst! Check out my most common theme, above, to find out.

Favourite freebie / Meilleur cadeau

Without a doubt, it was our free night of wild camping in a tipi with Tipi Adventures.

This was my first ever proper pitch. I contacted Ed out of the blue and he could have said no. Instead it looks like this collaboration will roll on into 2018 with more wild camping adventures for the acorns!

I am also deeply thankful to Puddlegear for dressing all four acorns head-to-toes in their fabulous rain gear, to the Powerscourt Estate for the annual family membership, and to the Irish Forest School Association for inviting me to attend their inaugural conference.

Best blog moment / Meilleur moment

Having the post A Summer of Wild Swimming featured on all the linkups I added it to.

Worst blog moment / Pire moment

Having my site turned off by HostPapa after I refused to give in to their shady sales technique. Of course this happened without warning, at the weekend in December, following an exhausting week of illness in our house.

Brian promptly helped me switch to Siteground, and although I lost a few comments in the transfer, the move has been pretty seamless.

I often struggle with titles – it is difficult to come up with something that works equally well in English and in French.

My favourite title of the year could be Of Coloured Clays and Green Lentils, about a surprisingly educational family walk in Puy lentil country, Haute-Loire, France.

This is something I have never done yet.

What I learned in 2017 / Ce que j’ai appris en 2017

I have learnt 1001 things in 2017. Carving out your own space in the blogosphere takes time, dedication and LOTS of work.

While I don’t see myself as a seasoned blogger yet, I am nowhere near as clueless as I was a year ago. This steep learning curve can seem daunting at times, but looking back and seeing how much my blog has grown in the last twelve months makes it all worthwhile.

What my blog did for me in 2017 / Ce que mon blog m’a apporté en 2017

It has taken us on countless family adventures, some of which we would never have dreamed of. Camping in a tipi, anyone?

It has also introduced me to a number of blogging friends, both in Ireland and further afield, a totally unexpected side-effect of blogging!

And last but not least, this blog keeps defining me. After 10+ years of full time mothering, it gives me purpose and focus. I think, I hope, that I am a better mum for it.

Enfin, ce blog me définit.

The biggest surprise of 2017 / La meilleure surprise de 2017

Being featured in the Irish Times certainly ranks up there in terms of surprises! In September Irish Times journalist Sheila Wayman contacted me out of the blue for an article she was writing on how to enjoy Ireland’s great outdoors whatever the weather.

On Tuesday 3rd October, How to avoid becoming a fair-weather family appeared in the Irish Times Health+Life supplement, with a centrefold photo taken by photographer Nick Bradshaw.

The acorns proudly took copies of the paper to show to their classmates and teachers. Their principal pinned the article up on the school’s information board. Parents stopped me at the school gates to express their congratulations.

Meanwhile the traffic on my blog increased tenfold on that day.

Nick gracefully emailed me the photo, which now hands proudly on the mantelpiece in our living room – a family portrait with a story to tell!
