The acorns went back to school today, and once again I am left wondering where the past eight weeks went…

Already the days are shorter and the temperatures cooler. Between school runs and work commitments, family time is getting squeezed yet again, not to mention the family finances, with all the unavoidable back-to-school purchases.

It may be September but summer hasn’t said its last word yet.

Here are 5 ideas to beat the back-to-school blues. No need to travel far, or spend a lot of money. Just get outside with the kids, have fun, and keep that summer feel going!

1. Take a hike / Partez à pied

children-hiking-trail-glenmalure-wicklow-ireland

September is a great time of year for hiking – the days are still long enough that you needn’t worry about getting caught by nighfall, and the weather remains family-friendly, i.e. warm and dry enough for some beautiful walks with a summer feel. Perfect to forget the back-to-school blues!

September in Ireland is also the time of year when the heather-clad hillsides turn from their usual russet brown to a tapestry of mellow purple tones.

We’ve had some of our most memorable walking adventures in the late summer sun of September. The walk to Lough Dan, Co Wicklow and, only a week later, the strenuous hike up Tonelagee to see the cobalt-blue, heart-shaped Lough Ouler (in which we swam, albeit briefly, last year), definitely stand out in our family’s records.

Make sure you read my 7 tips for hiking with kids, and you will soon be on your way to beat the back-to-school blues.

If your children are still too young for hiking, check out FamilyWalksIreland‘s database of buggy-friendly family walks.

2. Make a splash / Jetez-vous à l’eau

Come on, jump in! The water’s lovely. Seriously.

It may be hard to believe it, but September and October are the months when the sea is at its warmest. Warm is somewhat a loose term when it comes to Ireland’s coastal waters, but if you’re thinking of giving it a go, now is the time to do it!

Dip your toes, take the plunge, immerse yourself.

And be warned – outdoor swimming is hugely invigorating, and highly addictive.

If you don’t live near the coast, the lakes and rivers are probably warmer than the sea (depending on their altitude), as they are smaller bodies of water. But they will also cool down quicker should the temperatures take a nosedive.

So pack your beach bag and your swim gear (not forgetting some warm clothes to wear after your dip), take a look at Kids of the Wild‘s beach safety guide, and enjoy the water while the sun still shines.

Allez-y, sautez !

3. Pick blackberries / Cueillez des mûres

There is nothing quite like coming home with smeared, sticky hands from picking dark, juicy blackberries. At this time of year, the many brambles lining the ditches, footpaths and grasslands are heavy with fruit. So grab a bucket and enrol some helping hands, and pick enough wild fruit to make your own blackberry jam or jelly.

Back to school time means blackberry-picking time / A la rentrée, c’est la saison des mûres.

You can bulk up your harvest with cooking apples, as per the Hedgerow Jam recipe in Preserves, my jamming bible. Or you can use blackberries only, like my mum has always done. The deep colour and the intense flavour remind me of my grandmother’s unsurpassed blackberry jelly, and of sunny breakfasts in her house with jelly spread thick on fresh, crunchy French bread.

Eldeberries are another September foraging gem. Where only a couple of months ago fragrant elderflowers gently swayed in the breeze, florets of tiny, hard green berries have appeared. Like blackberries, they are now ripening into a deep purple, which spreads to the stems.

Elderberry cordial makes for a warming winter drink, even a non-alcoholic mulled wine if you add cinnamon sticks, orange slices, raisins, etc. The possibilities are endless.

It comes as a bonus that vitamin C-rich elderberries boast many sniffle-busting benefits.

4. On your bike on a greenway / A vélo sur une voie verte

Whether the kids have gone back to school or not, family cycling doesn’t get much better than on a greenway. Twice we cycled on the Blessington Greenway, Co Wicklow. If transporting six bikes on our car wasn’t such a logistical nightmare, we would already have explored several of Ireland’s 20 or so greenways.

greenway-children-cycling-Wicklow-Ireland

Those “mixed-use trails” can be used by walkers, cyclists and other non-motorised transport, completely free of charge. Often built along disused railway lines, greenways are amazing facilities that let you explore an area at a gentle pace, safe from traffic.

The Great Southern Greenway, between Achill Island and Wesport, Co Mayo, was the first of its kind. The Waterford Greenway, between Waterford and Dungarvan, Co Waterford, officially opened in August 2016. The Great Southern Greenway, in west Limerick/north Kerry, follows the old Limerick to Tralee railway line.

“Greenways have helped make cycling and walking breaks a mainstream option, rather than the domain of eager activity nuts” writes Irish Times journalist Manchán Magan in The story behind Ireland’s greenway success.

Go on, get on your bike and explore your area’s hidden gems!

  • I love you Annette, this is a wonderful read and great suggestions – on Caroline’s first day back I took her blackberrying on the cliffs after school so it’s great to see you’ve got it in here for others to try. And September seas are so often the warmest. Loved your swimming video on FB the other day. And of course thanks so much for the mention!

    • Wow, you were quick writing up this comment! Thank you so much for the lovely words, as always. I think we go and pick blackberries next week after school someday. We have something planned for the weekend but I don’t want to jinx the weather by announcing it too soon 😉

  • Great ideas. Family time seems to slip away once the school time begins. I need to make sure we still get the chance to get outdoors and experience the world instead of cocooning inside and muttering “I’m tired” 🙂 We will have to plan for a bike ride and a hike soon. #countrykids

  • We have just been out on he bikes with the boys. #countrykids

  • Such a lovely time of year to be outdoors. We have been swimming in the sea more these past couple of weeks than the rest of summer, it is indeed a tonic. I love all the berries and fruits out now too, so much to spot in the countryside and like you we are making the most of it before the nights draw in too far. #CountryKids

  • Some great ideas for getting outdoors at this time of year. I’m gutted that my son doesn’t like blackberries as we have so many growing close to us #CountryKids

  • Great ideas and tips thanks #countrykids

  • I’m back again for a second chance to read this great post! Thanks so much for sharing your ideas with #CountryKids, this is exactly what we all need to remind us to keep getting the kids outdoors once they’re back at school. Look forward to reading this weekend’s adventure, weather permitting of course..!

  • Great ideas. We still like to get outside as much as we can now our eldest is back at school. #countrykids

  • I always love ideas for getting outdoors with children and these are great ones. I never knew that the sea was a little warmer at this time of year. Blackberry picking is a firm favourite with us and I always enjoy going for a hike. It’s always good to try something new too! 🙂 #countrykids

  • You have me wishing for a trip to Ireland. #AdventureCalling

  • Some great ideas. We hope to keep getting outdoors now that the boys are back at school/nursery. Its great to have some outdoor family time #AdventureCalling

  • Great post. You’re right: September and October shouldn’t mean the end of our adventures. I hope you’re right about sea temperatures – I’m going coasteering this weekend so could do with them being lukewarm haha. Thanks for joining #adventurecalling we’ll be back open in the morning for more new posts.
