Wild swim in Glendalough’s Upper Lake / Baignade sauvage à Glendalough

Another Thursday, another #SeagirlsOnTour adventure. After Lough Bray Upper in late April and Dublin’s famed Forty Foot last month, this week’s wild swim destination was the Upper Lake in Glendalough. Five Seagirls + one baby mermaid out for a freshwater dip in the most iconic spot in Wicklow.

Après être allées à Lough Bray en avril, puis au fameux Forty Foot de Dublin le mois dernier, le Lac supérieur de Glendalough était notre destination de la semaine. Cinq Seagirls + une bambine sirène, en route pour une baignade en eau douce au site le plus emblématique de Wicklow.

For the longest time, I thought swimming in Glendalough was not allowed. But a quick check on the Wicklow Mountains National Park‘s website revealed that, if water sports such as canoeing and kayaking are indeed prohibited, swimming is tacitly allowed in the Upper Lake. But it is not encouraged for obvious safety reasons, as the water in the lake does get very cold, and there is no lifeguard on duty.

J’ai longtemps cru, à tort, que la baignade était interdite à Glendalough. Mais un coup d’œil rapide au site du Parc national des Monts de Wicklow a révélé que si les activités nautiques telles que le canoë et le kayak sont effectivement interdites, la baignade est autorisée dans le Lac supérieur. Elle n’est pas encouragée, pour des raisons évidentes de sécurité, étant donné que l’eau du lac peut être très froide et que la baignade n’est pas surveillée.

Following the Miners’ Road along the Upper Lake, we soon spotted a small rocky cove between the tall Scots pines lining the shore. This would do just fine.

Empruntant la route des Mineurs, qui longe le bord du lac, nous avons vite repéré une petite anse rocailleuse entre les pins sylvestres qui jalonnent le rivage. Juste ce qu’il nous fallait.

I waded in carefully over the slippery silt-coated rocks, Joanne ahead of me, Carole beside me. Thigh-deep, I let go and submerged myself as if walking off a high step. I swam out just far enough to catch a glimpse of the Glenealo waterfall at the top end of the Upper Lake. Treading water, I tried to capture a few photos of it, but staying afloat in freshwater is hard and unsteady work indeed!

Je me suis avancée lentement sur les pierres glissantes du rivage, Joanne devant moi et Carole à côté. Dans l’eau jusqu’aux cuisses, je me suis enfoncée comme on descend une marche d’escalier. J’ai nagé juste assez loin pour apercevoir la cascade du Glenealo, qui se déverse à l’autre bout du lac. Nageant sur place, j’ai essayé d’en prendre quelques photos, mais il est difficile de rester à flot sans le soutien de l’eau salée !

The water felt soft and welcoming. I swam in the Upper Lake’s cool embrace, nestled among Glendalough’s mystic mountains, beneath a warm misty sky.

Back to within my depth as Carole and Joanne got out, I took countless photos to capture this unique frog’s eye view on the Upper Lake that so few people ever experience. The wind-ruffled surface glistened in ceaseless ripples under the fast changing sky, serene blue above, peat speckled below.

L’eau était douce et accueillante. Je nageai dans la fraîche étreinte du lac, blottie entre les montagnes mystiques de Glendalough, sous un ciel à la brume tiède.

De retour là où j’avais pied, comme Carole et Joanne s’apprêtaient à sortir, je continuai de photographier ce point de vue unique sur le Lac supérieur, que peu de gens ont la chance de voir. La surface froissée par la brise luisait en ondulations incessantes sous le ciel variable, bleu calme dessus, mouchetée de tourbe dessous.

Then the sun came out and time stood still. I surrendered to the moment. I let out a long exhale and floated on my back between earth and sky, my face turned upwards to the warm light. Suspended on the sunbathed surface, I felt lifted. Carried. Held. 

I let myself relax into this rare moment of communion with the elements, of immersion in the here and now, of awe. My fellow Seagirls left me to it, as if by tacit understanding. I didn’t feel under any pressure to come out of the water sooner than I did, and for that, I am so grateful to this pod of mermaids.

Coz sometimes, you’ve got to stay in until your brain stops fizzing.

Puis le soleil fit son apparition et ce fut comme si le temps avait suspendu son vol. J’expirai longuement et flottai sur le dos entre ciel et terre, le visage tourné vers la chaude lumière. Suspendue à la surface baignée de soleil, je me suis sentie portée. Tenue.

Je me savourai ce moment rare de communion avec les éléments, d’immersion dans l’instant présent, d’enchantement. Les Seagirls me laissèrent faire sans dire mot, comme par compréhension tacite. Je ne sentais pas pressée de sortir de l’eau plus tôt et pour ça, je suis infiniment reconnaissante à ce groupe de sirènes.

Parce que parfois, on a besoin de tremper jusqu’à ce que le cerveau arrête de crépiter.

Practical information

Open all year round, the Wicklow Mountains National Park extends over 20,000 hectares of upland mountain scenery, including the heritage site of Glendalough, Co Wicklow. An open access policy applies on Park lands allowing visitors to explore freely on foot.

The mountain lakes are occasionally used by locals and visitors. The sandy area at the eastern end of the Upper Lake in Glendalough is a popular spot for paddling and swimming during the summer. Visitors are warned that the lake is deep with sudden depth changes. The shallows areas are quite narrow and drop off suddenly at a certain point. Parents, in particular, need to be aware of the dangers, and should never leave their children to swim or paddle without close supervision.

For safety reasons, inflatable airbeds and other inflatables are not permitted.

There is no lifeguard on duty. Life rings are present at regular intervals along the shore. Anyone entering the lake is warned that they do so at their own risk.
