I’m angry.

The bad news about the state of Planet Earth keep coming, yet nothing changes.

I’m angry.

A month ago, it was French environmentalist Nicolas Hulot resigning on air as Environment Minister. If he, who knows the issues inside out, can’t get anything done in government, then who can?

I’m angry.

Two weeks ago, it was French astrophysicist Aurélien Barrau warning the general public about the dire consequences of climate change, and calling for immediate action from political leaders around the world.

In all likehood, our children are going to inherit a world at war. A war caused by climate change, with millions of refugees fleeing their devastated homeland, with nowhere to go.

I’m angry.

Last week, it was Liz Bonnin’s shocking BBC documentary Drowning In Plastic, showing how plastic pollution has reached an unimaginable scale, and calling to “turn off the plastic tap” now.

Plastic is killing the world’s oceans. All of them. Yet plastic production is still increasing.

I’m angry.

This week, it was the chilling IPCC report announcing we have 12 years left to radically change our ways, or the Earth is set for disaster.

12 years.

Jedi is 12 years old now, and do you know what has changed in terms of climate change and protection of the environment since the day he was born?

Nothing.
Nothing has changed. Not our attitudes. Not our priorities. Certainly not the political discourse.

Economic growth is still touted as the be-all-end-all, based on the ruthless exploitation of the Earth’s finite resources. 

While the effects of climate change are already there for all to see, the powers that be, from around the world, keep looking the other way.

More oil drilling exploration in the Arctic.
More dairy farming.
More deforestation.

It is as it’s always been – business as usual.

“Criminal apathy” – French daily Le Monde called it out for what it is.

We are at the edge of the precipice. Yet we keep our foot on the gas.

No planet B

12 years.

I worry about the future. I worry about my children.

My four acorns have fallen well and truly in love with the Earth. Yet it is deeply unfair to expect them to clean up this mess and save our planet, while we sit on our hands.

So I have applied to become a Cool Planet Champion for Wicklow, and I will be working with Leave No Trace Ireland to help spread their message – The outdoors is yours, protect it!

It is time to do our bit before it’s too late.
It is time to make our voices heard.

It is time to roar for Planet Earth.

Les nouvelles alarmantes sur l’état catastrophique de notre planète bleue s’accumulent. Pourtant, rien ne change.

Je suis en colère.

Il y a deux mois, c’était le ministre français de l’Environnement Nicolas Hulot qui démissionnait en direct à la radio. Si une telle figure de référence en matière d’écologie ne réussit pas à faire bouger les choses au sein du gouvernement, qui le pourra ?

Je suis en colère.

Il y a quinze jours, c’était l’astrophysicien Aurélien Barrau qui expliquait au grand public les conséquences désastreuses du changement climatique, et appelait les dirigeants politiques à y faire face immédiatement.

En continuant sur cette lancée, nos enfants vont hériter d’un monde en guerre. Une guerre causée par le changement climatique, et le déplacement de millions de réfugiés fuyant leur terre dévastée, sans nulle part où aller.

Je suis en colère.

Il y a une semaine, c’était la journaliste Liz Bonnin et son reportage pour la BBC intitulé Drowning In Plastic (“noyés dans le plastique”), montrant comment la pollution plastique a atteint une échelle inimaginable et appelant à “fermer le robinet du plastique”.

Le plastique est en train de tuer les océans du monde. Tous, sans exception. Pourtant, la production de plastique continue d’augmenter.

Je suis en colère.

Il y a quelques jours, c’était le rapport alarmant du GIEC annonçant qu’il nous reste 12 ans pour introduire des changements radicaux, et éviter un désastre total pour la Terre.

12 ans.

Jedi a 12 ans. Or savez-vous ce qui a changé en matière de réchauffement climatique et de protection de l’environnement depuis le jour de sa naissance ?

Rien.
Rien n’a changé. Ni nos attitudes. Ni nos priorités. Ni encore moins le discours politique.

Une croissance économique exponentielle demeure l’objectif ultime, reposant bien sûr sur l’exploitation implacable des ressources naturelles limitées de la planète.

Tandis que les effets du changement climatique sont déjà évidents, les dirigeants politiques, de par le monde, continuent de les ignorer. 

Forage pétrolier dans l’Arctique.
Intensification de l’agriculture.
Déforestation.

Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose.

“Une apathie criminelle” : Le Monde ne mâche pas ses mots et appelle un chat un chat.

Nous sommes au bord du gouffre. Et nous gardons le pied sur l’accélérateur.

Pas de planète B

12 ans.

Je m’inquiète pour le futur. Je m’inquiète pour mes enfants.

Mes quatre graines de chêne sont bel et bien tombées amoureuses de la Terre. Mais quelle injustice que de les laisser payer les pots cassés, pendant que notre génération laisse faire.

C’est pourquoi j’espère être nommée Cool Planet Champion pour le comté de Wicklow. Je vais aussi collaborer avec Leave No Trace Ireland pour répandre leur message : la nature est à vous, protégez-là !

Il est temps de passer à l’action.
Il est temps de faire entendre nos voix.

Il est temps de rugir pour la planète.
