Clara Vale – Walking in an autumn wonderland / Balade en paradis d’automne

Yellow, brown, green, orange, red, golden;
Fluttering in the breeze, crunching under foot, floating in the river;
Leaves were everywhere in the woods of the Clara Vale Nature Reserve.

When we set off to walk a section of the Avonmore Way, we didn’t expect to set foot in an autumn wonderland.

Des feuilles d’automne partout dans les bois de Clara Vale.

Partis marcher sur une section de l’Avonmore Way, nous ne nous attendions pas à entrer dans un paradis d’automne.

This hike on the Avonmore Way was a long time in the planning. The little legs in our family aren’t sturdy enough to cover the entire 12km-long linear trail, between the towns of Laragh and Rathdrum, Co Wicklow.

So the plan was to walk the 7km of the southern section with our friend Mary Ann and her two sons, parking one car in Rathdrum and another at the halfway point in Clara Vale.

Said plan was quickly amended when Mary Ann announced in the morning that her younger boy was unwell. Setting off with our four acorns and her older son O, Jedi’s best friend, we decided to do one of the Clara Vale loop walks – at 5.6km, the green trail looked ideal.

Cette randonnée sur l’Avonmore Way nous trottait en tête depuis longtemps. Car les petites jambes de la famille ne sont pas encore assez solides pour couvrir les 12 km de ce sentier balisé, entre les villes de Laragh et Rathdrum, Co Wicklow.

Il fut donc prévu de parcourir les 7km de la moitié sud avec notre amie Mary Ann et ses deux fils, et de garer une voiture à Rathdrum et l’autre à Clara Vale, au milieu du trajet.

Ledit plan fut rapidement modifié quand Mary Ann annonça qu’un des deux garçons était malade. Prenant la route avec nos quatre graines de chêne et l’aîné de Mary Ann, aussi le meilleur copain de Jedi, nous avons décidé de faire une des boucles de la réserve naturelle de Clara Vale. Avec une distance de 5,6 km, le sentier vert semblait idéal.

Leaving the car at the forest entrance outside the tiny hamlet of Clara (a couple of houses, a church and a bridge over the Avonmore River), we immediately found ourselves walking through an autumn wonderland of colourful leaves and dappled sunlight filtering through the trees.

Soon the majestic Avonmore River appeared below the trail, flowing peacefully, silently, between tall oak trees and thick bracken displaying the full gamut of autumn colours. Every so often, a soft breeeze brought down a shower of fluttering leaves to its peaty waters.

Laissant la voiture à l’entrée de la réserve après le hameau de Clara (deux maisons, une église et un pont de pierre sur la rivière Avonmore), ce fut comme d’entrer soudain dans un paradis de feuilles d’automne multicolores et de lumière tamisée par les arbres.

Bientôt, la majestueuse Avonmore apparut en contrebas du sentier, s’écoulant sereinement, silencieusement, entre de grands chênes et d’épaisses fougères arborant la palette complète de l’automne. De temps à autre, une douce brise provoquait une averse de feuilles tombant en lents tourbillons sur les eaux couleur tourbe.

Hardly half an hour into the walk, the acorns stopped at a trailside stand of birch trees and immediately become absorbed in den building. 

Une demi-heure à peine après le départ, les graines de chêne s’arrêtèrent dans une boulaie en bord de chemin et s’adonnèrent immédiatement à la construction de cabanes.

When Brian and I decided to go and explore a bit further, the four boys chose to stay put. Mermaid came along with us.

For the second time within a few days, I was walking by the beautiful Avonmore. Yet up until a year ago when we camped in a tipi for the first time, I knew nothing of this splendid river.

Fast-flowing yet calm and quiet, wild and unspoilt yet accessible, majestic yet gentle, it is a true hidden gem. Meandering between thick woodlands of evergreens and native trees, the Avonmore remains much like Ireland’s river valleys must have looked before deforestation took place.

Quand Brian et moi avons décidé d’aller un peu plus loin en quête d’un coin de pique-nique au bord de l’eau, les quatre garçons préférèrent rester où ils étaient. Sirène nous accompagna.

Pour la seconde fois en l’espace de quelques jours, je marchais au bord de l’Avonmore. Dire qu’il y a un an à peine, avant notre première nuit de camping dans un tipi, je ne connaissais rien de cette rivière splendide !

Sauvage et préservée et pourtant facile d’accès, calme et sereine malgré ses flots rapides, tout à la fois majestueuse et humble, elle demeure un véritable trésor caché. Serpentant entre des bois touffus de conifères et d’essences locales, l’Avonmore laisse entrevoir l’apparence des vallées d’Irlande avant que le pays soit déforesté.

Following the Avonmore Way, we came to the bend in the river where, on the opposite bank, Tipi Adventures have their tree tent site. A little further along, a wooden bridge dedicated to local hillwaker Jack Horsham spans the Cronybyrne Brook. In the shade of the trees, its slate black waters were speckled with the bronze of autumn leaves.

A few dozen metres further along the Avonmore Way, we came to the spot facing Tipi Adventures‘ pebble beach, on the opposite bank – this is where we took our first wild swim of the year, also our first time bathing in an Irish river.

Suivant toujours l’Avonmore Way, nous sommes arrivés au méandre dans la rivière où, en face, Tipi Adventures installe ses hamacs et tentes suspendues. Un peu plus loin, un petit pont de bois, dédié à un randonneur local du nom de Jack Horsham, enjambe le ruisseau de Cronybyrne. A l’ombre des arbres, ses eaux d’ardoise sont tachetées du bronze des feuilles d’automne.

Plus loin encore, nous avons aperçu sur la rive opposée la plage de galets de Tipi Adventures, théâtre, au printemps dernier, de notre première baignade sauvage de l’année, et aussi notre première baignade en rivière d’Irlande.

It was time to turn back and go check on the boys’ den building, but not without stopping to admire the sumptuous reflections of autumn colours on the still surface of the river bend.

Il était temps de retourner voir les garçons sur leur chantier, non sans admirer d’abord les reflets somptueux des couleurs d’automne sur la surface lisse du méandre.

Back at the trailside stand of birch trees, progress had been swift in our short absence. Two dens made of birch sticks now stood between the thin trees, one by Jedi and his friend O, the other by Squirrel and Pebbles. 

While the older boys went in search of fern leaves to cover their dens, Pebbles worked on the surroundings, building a gate for the “back garden” and a fire tripod in the front.

Mermaid soon busied herself with making a fairy house at the foot of a mighty oak tree.

Den building in an autumn wonderland

There were five children in the woods yet, apart from the odd design-related conversation, barely any sound could be heard. No shouting, no squabbling, no fighting – outdoor play in all its magical simplicity.

De retour au bois de bouleaux, le chantier avait bien avancé en notre brève absence. Deux cabanes en bâtons se dressaient entre les troncs fins, une érigée par Jedi et son copain O, et l’autre par Ecureuil et Caillou.

Pendant que les trois grands partaient en quête de fougères pour couvrir leur ouvrage, Caillou aménageait le pourtour immédiat de sa cabane, installant une barrière pour le “jardin” et un trépied pour le feu devant l’entrée.

Sirène se mit à construire une maison de fée au pied d’un chêne formidable.

Cabanes dans un paradis d’automne

Ils étaient cinq enfants dans les bois. Pourtant, à part des bribes de conversation relative à leurs chantiers respectifs, le silence était presque total. Ni cri, ni dispute, ni altercation : le jeu en plein air en toute simplicité. Magique.

After two hours of deeply absorbed play and a nourishing bowl of instant noodles, the acorns were ready to complete the loop walk.

The green signposts soon took us up and away from the river, through stunning woodlands in full autumn splendour.

Most of the mature oak trees were planted in the 19th century, but the area has been at least partially under forest cover since the Ice Age. Thousands of young birch trees have sprung up where non-native conifers were removed by the NPWS.

The result is an enchanting forest whose trails are carpeted in autumn leaves, whose mighty oak trees stand guard over a dense undergrowth of bracken and spongy ground and thick moss, whose forest floor looks ideal for vast swathes of wild bluebells to bloom come springtime.

Au bout de deux heures de jeu intense et après un bol de nouilles instantanées, les graines de chêne étaient prêtes à boucler la boucle.

Les balises vertes nous éloignèrent bientôt de la rivière, à travers des bois en pleine splendeur automnale.

Si la plupart des chênes y furent plantés au XIXe siècle, cette vallée est restée, au moins partiellement, sous couverture forestière depuis la dernière glaciation. Des milliers de jeunes bouleaux ont poussé là où le Service des parcs nationaux a arraché les conifères non-natifs. 

Il en résulte une forêt enchanteresse où les sentiers sont tapissés de feuilles mortes, où les grands chênes protègent un sous-bois riche de fougères, de tourbe et de mousse, où le sol spongieux paraît idéal pour la floraison printanière de vastes parterres de jacinthes des bois.

Practical information

The Avonmore Way is a 12km trail which was inaugurated in April 2016. It follows a mixture of minor roads, forest roads and tracks. It provides stunning views of the Wicklow Mountains as it skirts around Trooperstown Hill before winding its way through the beautiful Clara Vale Nature Reserve alongside the Avonmore River. The trail is durable underfoot and suitable for all fitness levels. There is trail head signage at the beginning of the walk and the route is marked with yellow arrows on a black background along the way. The walk starts from the Laragh side at Trooperstown Forest Carpark and from the Rathdrum side at Stump of the Castle Forest Entrance.

The Clara Vale Nature Reserve contains the largest area of semi-natural woodland in Wicklow and is potentially one of the largest stands of native hardwoods in the country (source: National Parks & Wildlife Service).

There are five entrances to the nature reserve, and three loop walks to choose from, all well signposted with coloured arrows – 2km (red), 5.6km (green) and 9.5km (blue). The longest route takes 2-3 hours.

Getting there

From the village of Laragh, near Glendalough, take the R755 towards Rathdrum. Drive for about 5km until a small, easy to miss turn-off onto the L6120, on the left-hand side, signposted Clara Vale RC Church.

Drive down to the tiny hamlet of Clara, across the bridge and past the church. Continue uphill on the other side of the valley until reaching a small wayside car park at the entrance of the nature reserve.

L’Avonmore Way est un sentier de randonnée de 12 km, inauguré en avril 2016. Il emprunte un mélange de routes secondaires, pistes forestières et sentiers. Il offre une vue superbe sur les monts de Wicklow comme il contourne la colline de Trooperstown, avant de serpenter dans la magnifique réserve naturelle de Clara Vale, au bord de la rivière Avonmore. Le sentier aménagé convient à tous les niveaux de forme physique. Le départ du sentier est signalé, et l’itinéraire est balisé tout au long par des flèches jaunes sur fond noir. Le sentier démarre au parking de la forêt de Trooperstown, près de Laragh, ou alors au parking de la forêt Stump of the Castle, près de Rathdrum.

La réserve naturelle de Clara Vale contient la plus vaste superficie de bois semi-naturels de Wicklow. Elle est aussi une des plus grandes forêts de bois durs natifs du pays.

La réserve compte 5 entrées et trois boucles de randonnée, toutes balisées avec des flèches colorées : 2 km (rouge), 5,6 km (vert) et 9,5 km (bleu). L’itinéraire le plus long prend deux à trois heures de marche.

S’y rendre

Au départ du village de Laragh, près de Glendalough, prenez la route R755 en direction de Rathdrum. Au bout de quelque 5km, tournez à gauche sur la L6120, signalée par un panneau marqué Clara Vale RC Church. Attention, l’intersection est difficile à repérer.

Descendez jusqu’au hameau de Clara, franchissez le pont et passez devant l’église. Montez sur le versant opposé jusqu’à un petit parking de fortune aménagé à l’entrée de la réserve.
