Powerscourt in full bloom for the Tulip Festival / Powerscourt en fleurs pour le Festival des Tulipes

On coming back from a glorious Easter weekend in Northern Ireland, on what turned out to be the only sunny afternoon of the week, the acorns and I went to check out the incredible Tulip Festival at Powerscourt Gardens, Co Wicklow. Hundreds upon thousands of tulips of all shapes, colours and sizes lined the herbaceous borders.

De retour d’un weekend de Pâques fabuleux en Irlande du Nord, et par le seul après-midi ensoleillé de cette deuxième semaine de vacances, les graines de chêne sommes allés visiter le Festival des Tulipes aux jardins de Powerscourt, Co Wicklow. Des tulipes par centaines et par milliers, de toutes les formes, couleurs et tailles, embellissaient les parterres herbacés.

Leaving the Tulip Festival behind, the acorns got stuck in a tree – literally.

Said tree was a weeping holly tree (Ilex pendula), as announced by Pebbles, who had been listening to the story on his audioguide. Mermaid was quick to inform us that it was a female holly tree, because of the few red berries left on it.

L’arbre en question était un houx à port pleureur (Ilex pendula), comme nous en informa Caillou, qui écoutait attentivement son audioguide. Sirène précisa qu’il s’agissait d’un houx femelle, à cause des quelques baies rouges encore présentes sur les branches tombantes.

The Tulip Festival wasn’t the only riot of colour on that balmy spring afternoon – the entire Powerscourt Gardens was awash with new shoots, bright young leaves and vibrant blooms.

Le Festival des Tulipes n’était pas la seule explosion de couleurs par ce bel après-midi de printemps. Les jardins tout entiers resplendissaient de nouvelles pousses, de jeunes feuilles vert tendre et de fleurs rivalisant d’éclat.

A visit to Powerscourt would not be complete without a game of tag or hide-and-seek around the sublime Japanese Garden.

Une visite aux jardins de Powerscourt serait incomplète sans une partie de cache-cache ou de chat dans le sublime Jardin japonais.

Elle paraît si petite dans cette explosion de fleurs printanières et de feuilles luxuriantes, dans le Jardin japonais plein de vie. Elle paraît si petite, et pourtant parfaitement à sa place.

As the bell announcing closing time started ringing, Jedi spotted a tree which looked uncannily like a giant toe nail!

The acorns then made their way towards the elegant steps of the italianate terraces, but not without a quick stop at the mysterious boat house, right under the golden winged horses watching over the Triton Lake.

We  were among the last visitors to leave the sun-bathed estate, after another memorable afternoon around the Powerscourt Gardens.

Comme la cloche sonnait annonçant la fermeture des jardins, Jedi repéra une racine d’arbre qui ressemblait à s’y méprendre à un énorme ongle !

Ensuite, les graines de chêne se dirigèrent lentement vers les élégantes volées de marches à l’italienne, non sans un petit détour par le mystérieux hangar à bateau, situé à l’aplomb des deux chevaux ailés qui surveillent le bassin de Triton.

Nous étions parmi les derniers visiteurs à sortir du domaine baigné de soleil, au terme d’un autre après-midi mémorable dans les jardins de Powerscourt.

Powerscourt Estate is part of Ireland’s Ancient East. The gardens were voted third best in the world by National Geographic.

Getting there

If travelling southbound on the N11 (Wexford), take exit 7 to Bray and Greystones (north). At the first roundabout, take the first exit, signposted for Dublin and Powerscourt. Cross the bridge over the N11. At the second roundabout, take the third exit to Dublin. Stay on the slip road for exit 6a to Enniskerry.
If travelling northbound on the N11 (Dublin), take exit 6a to Enniskerry.

Follow the R117 until Enniskerry. On the village’s main square, keep left on the R760 towards Powerscourt. Continue out of the village on that steep, narrow road, all the way to the main entrance gate to the Powerscourt Estate on the right. Once inside the gate, follow the avenue to the car park. Entrance to the gardens is through the ticket office, inside Powerscourt House.

Powerscourt est un des sites du circuit des Terres ancestrales d’Irlande (Ireland’s Ancient East). Les jardins ont été élus le troisième du monde par le magazine National Geographic.

S’y rendre

Circulant sur la N11 en direction du sud (Wexford), prenez la sortie 7 pour Bray et Greystones (north). Au premier rond-point, empruntez la première sortie, signalée pour Dublin et Powerscourt. Traversez le pont au-dessus de la N11. Au second rond-point, prenez la troisième sortie, en direction de Dublin. Restez sur la bretelle et poursuivez par la sortie 6a pour Enniskerry.
Circulant sur la N11 en direction du nord (Dublin), prenez la sortie 6a pour Enniskerry.

Suivez la R117 jusqu’à Enniskerry. Sur la place principale du village, prenez à gauche sur la R760 en direction de Powerscourt. Continuez sur cette route raide et étroite, jusqu’au grand portail d’entrée de Powerscourt sur la droite. Une fois passé le portail, suivez l’avenue jusqu’au parking. L’entrée se fait par la billetterie, à l’intérieur de Powerscourt House.
